A Screening of “The Doctrine of Discovery:
Unmasking the Domination Code,”
and Q & A with renowned Indigenous speakers
Steven T. Newcomb & Shawna Bluestar Newcomb
Directed by Sheldon Wolfchild,
Based on Steven Newcomb’s Book Pagans in the Promised Land: Decoding the Doctrine of Christian Discovery
This movie shares a hidden history, and historical timeline that speaks to the deep roots behind the traumatic patterns of domination and dehumanization, which ultimately impacts all aspects of our lives, resulting in the current social, political, economic and ecological crises. Compassionate witnessing fosters a deeper awareness and understanding so that we can see our common wounds, and come together for personal and collective healing for all peoples. We want to emphasize that we honor all spiritual paths and hold a vision of healing for all peoples, beings, the planet, and our future generations.
Vatican documents issued popes of the fifteenth century resulted in a tragic global momentum of domination and dehumanization, and ultimately the ecological crisis we see today. This genocidal trajectory has led to the development of political, legal, and economic systems in the U.S., Canada, and elsewhere throughout the world that are still being used against Indigenous Nations and Peoples to this day. The film concludes with traditional teachings that provide the basis for a much needed healing alternative for humanity and Mother Earth at this time.
Overview
This screening of our documentary movie “The Doctrine of Discovery” will coincide with Pope Francis’s trip to Canada from July 24-28, 2022, which the Vatican is calling a “Pilgrimage of Penance.”
In reflecting on the perpetual patterns of domination and dehumanization over the past 500 years, we call into question the concept of penance in this historical context.
-What is an adequate penance for the pope to pay for the Vatican papal bulls having unleashed on the planet more than five centuries of domination and destruction of original nations and peoples?
-What is an adequate penance for the Vatican papacy to pay for having used papal bulls to repeatedly exhort the Christian world, "to invade, search out, capture, vanquish, and subdue" non-Christians and establish domination throughout the planet, an exhortation that has resulted in the destruction of our languages, cultures, spiritual traditions, as well as our sacred and ceremonial places?
We call upon all peoples of the world to come together in a vision of peace and healing, walking the sacred path.
