Hier engagieren sich 33 professionelle Betriebe und mehr als 150 Tierliebhaberinnen und Tierliebhaber, Hobbyhalterinnen und Hobbyhalter, um alte vom Aussterben bedrohte Nutztierrassen zu retten. Archebauern an der Elbe sind nicht selten Freigeister, die auch für sich selbst und ihre Familien eine Arche gesucht haben, um selbstbestimmt und unabhängig zu leben.
Gunnar Hansen und Isabell Stich haben sich 2014 spontan ins Wendland verliebt. Sie haben Hals über Kopf Haus und Garten verkauft und sind in Hannover auf den alten Schimmelhof nach Dolgow umgezogen, um sich mit Coburger Fuchsschafen, Thüringer Waldziegen, Vorwerkhühnern und einem großen Gemüsegarten selbst zu versorgen. Bis dahin hatten beide nie etwas mit Landwirtschaft zu tun. Und so haben sie in ihren ersten Jahren als Archebauern "sämtliche Fehler, die man machen kann, einmal durch". Ihren Archehof und die Selbstversorgung sehen sie als Lebensaufgabe und -einstellung und geben nicht auf. Die bisher erstaunlichste Bilanz: "Es ist krass, wie viel weniger wir hier brauchen!" Im Vergleich zu ihrem alten Leben in Hannover ist es nur etwa ein Fünftel von dem, was sie noch vor sechs Jahren für unverzichtbar hielten.
Was das Paar zum Leben braucht und nicht selber produziert, wird mit anderen Höfen in der sogenannten Freien Republik Wendland getauscht. So macht Gunnar Hansen Futter für einen befreundeten Archelandwirt und der mästet ihm dafür jedes Jahr zwei Bentheimer Schweine. Die "Kooperationsschweine" werden dann gemeinsam geschlachtet und verwertet.
Der Film aus der Reihe NaturNah begleitet die Archebauern durch das Frühjahr 2020. Die Dokumentation zeigt den Alltag, die Idylle und die Probleme, mit denen kleine landwirtschaftliche Archebetriebe im Wendland kämpfen, aber auch ein ganz besonderes Netzwerk und ein gelebtes Geben und Nehmen.

In November 2012, an activist holed up in a complex tunnel system in the Hambach Forest, ending the silence about the deforestation of this once gigantic forest area between the cities of Cologne, Düsseldorf and Aachen. The energy company RWE has been felling this ancient forest since 1972, but the occupation has spread awareness of the clear-cutting far beyond the local boundaries. Today only 10% of this forest remains. Activists from different groups had taken on the task of making the Rheinische brown coal (lignite) area to a crystallisation point for the struggle against coal power generation. Five years later, between summer and autumn 2017, more than 10,000 people took part in protest actions around the mines.
In Brand III, Susanne Fasbender looks back at the first Climate Camps in the Rheinland, visits citizens taking action against the threat to good health caused by power generation from lignite, and tells the story of the forest occupation in the Hambach Forest until its eviction in 2018. In co-operation with the Hambach Forest Film Collective, she followed some of the many key events of the resistance, not only to document these individual transgressions, but also to give them a space where the underlying concepts are explained and where personal thoughts can be expressed. Activists speak about tactics and motivation, and about their experience of living in the forest and at the same time, through their struggle for a future worth living for, being exposed to anti-ecological repression mechanisms. "The eviction is not the end". That's how the movie ends.

AktivistInnen sprechen von Taktiken und Motivation, von ihren Erfahrungen damit, im Wald zu leben und sich gleichzeitig mit ihrem Kampf für eine lebenswerte Zukunft einer antiökologischen Aufstandsbekämpfung auszusetzen. Susanne Fasbender is a video artist based in Düsseldorf. She was the founder and director of the arthouse Film Day, Kunstfilmtag in Düsseldorf, an international artfilm project from 2007 to 2012. Ursprünglich begonnen auf der Basis meiner bisherigen Praxis in der Videokunst, entwickelte sich die Arbeit zu einem Forschungsprojekt über die ökologische Krise. In der Nähe des Rheinischen Braunkohlenreviers lebend, war es mir möglich, über einen langen Zeitraum Orte zu besuchen und die Verhältnisse vertieft verstehen zu lernen. Ich brauchte einige Jahre um die Filmtrilogie fertig zu stellen. Es wollte mir nicht reichen, die sozialen und ökologischen Zerstörungen und Kämpfe im Rheinischen Braunkohlenrevier zu dokumentieren ohne die dahinter stehenden Verhältnisse genauer zu verstehen und in diesem Film ausdrücken zu können. Das Potential, in diesem Gebiet den Verhältnissen der Landaneignung, des Rohstoffabbaus und der fossilen Energiewirtschaft im Konkreten, im Leben nachgehen zu können, war schon beim ersten Besuch, beim ersten Durchfahren der Straßen zu spüren. Macht eines Konzerns ist hier wie dicke Luft fühlbar. Sowohl in der Gegend der gigantischen Kraftwerke, die alles um sie herum überragen, als auch am Rande der Tagebaue und natürlich in den Dörfern. Der jahrzehntelange, alles beherrschende Zugriff auf das Land hat die Atmosphäre in der Region zutiefst geprägt. Alles scheint verletzt oder ist in tragischer Erwartung. Die kommende Zerstörung des noch ruhig da Liegenden ist auch in den noch bewohnten Orten allgegenwärtig. Die schon unbewohnten Dörfer sind von Menschen verwaist, während die Vögel den Wildwuchs ihrer Gärten und Parks mit ihrem Gesang begleiten. Die ungezählten uralten hohen Bäume, die die alten Orte bekleiden, werden, wenn es losgeht, als erstes beseitigt.
Im Rheinischen Braunkohlenrevier konzentriert sich für mich - sichtbar und unsichtbar - der ineinander verstrickte Themenkomplex der ökologischen Krise. Mag das Wort Krise vielen im Angesicht der weltweiten katastrophalen Überschwemmungen, Tsunamis und Dürren auch als zu harmlos erscheinen.
Wie gestaltet sich eigentlich die Frage nach dem Eigentum an Land und Rohstoffen in diesem großen „abgebaggerten“ Land, in dem sich seit Jahr-hunderten eine eigene Kulturlandschaft auf der Basis besonders fruchtbarer Lößböden entwickelt hatte? Was sagen die BewohnerInnen? Was bedeutet es eigentlich "Natur zu nutzen"? Was bedeutet der Ruf nach Klimagerechtig-keit? Warum eigentlich erreichen die Klimaabkommen nicht die geforderten Reduktionen? Warum wird der Ausbau fossiler Energien immer weiter voran-getrieben? Wie organisiert sich der Widerstand dagegen und was drückt sich aus in diesem Kampf zwischen Konzern, Staat und BesetzerInnen von Wald und Tagebauen? Die Fragen mussten gründlich geklärt werden und dafür bekam ich Gelegenheit, zusätzlich zu den Menschen, die im Rheinischen Braunkohlenrevier leben, umgesiedelt werden oder Widerstand leisten, auch Menschen zu interviewen, die seit Jahrzehnten mit den Themenkomplek Ökologie - Ökonomie - Klimaschutz arbeiten und Hintergründe auf der Basis ihres umfassendem Wissen erklären konnten. Darüber hinaus habe ich während der Schneidephase viele Studien gelesen, die sich mit den Verhältnissen in der internationalen Klimaschutzpolitik befassen, mit Landnahme, Aneignungsökonomie, imperialer Lebensweise, Klimagerechtigkeit. Es stellte sich heraus, das es sehr komplex ist, zu verstehen, wie Klimapolitik mit ihrenKompensationsmechanismen funktioniert. Von daher wird nicht umsonst so wenig darüber diskutiert, dass z.B. der Emissionshandel mit all seinen vielen Projektmechanismen immer im ersten Schritt mit Lebenswirklichkeiten von indigenen oder lokalen Gemeinschaften zu tun hat. Das hat mich sehr interessiert. So wurde der Klimaschutzplan der Bundesregierung und die dem internationalen Klimaschutz zugrunde liegenden globalen Verteilungsverhältnisse von Land und Wäldern Teil meines Prologes in BRAND I.
Neben den Dörfern, ging die Reise in den Hambacher Forst, der trotz seines Ausmasses an Waldrodung seit 1972 mitten im Städtedreieck Köln, Düsseldorf und Aachen erst durch die Waldbesetzung berühmt wurde. Da waren jedoch schon 80% seines Jahrhunderte alten Bestandes abgeholzt. Doch allein schon die ca. 20 - 10 % „Restwald“, die ich ab 2012 erleben durfte, waren riesig. Vieles wurde durch die Aktivitäten der UmweltaktivistInnen angeregt: Die legendären Waldspaziergänge des Waldführers Michael Zobel und nicht zuletzt dieser Film, denn durch die Waldbesetzung wurde ich im Jahr 2012 auf dieses Gebiet aufmerksam. Im Rheinischen Braunkohlenrevier hat sich seit dem Jahr 2010 mit dem ersten Klimacamp eine internationale Klimabewegung formiert, die zu einer großen Bewegung mit vielen AkteurInnen aus aller Welt heranwuchs.
Mit Hilfe einiger Menschen des Hambacher Forst Filmkollektivs konnte ich die Waldbesetzung als Teil dieser Bewegung von innen kennen und verstehen lernen: Die Diskrepanz zwischen medialer Narration und per-sönlicher Begegnung war frappierend. Eine Frage tauchte immer wieder auf: Wie gehen wir als Gesellschaft eigentlich um mit den meist jungen Menschen, die sich der Zerstörung unserer Erde in den Weg stellen?
Ich möchte ich mich bei all jenen besonders bedanken, die zu diesem Film beigetragen haben. Nur durch die Menschen, die sich engagieren mit For-schung und Wissen, mit körperlichem Einsatz, mit redaktionellen Beiträgen, mit der Organisation großer Aktionen, Waldführungen oder Camps oder im unermüdlichen täglichen Einzelkampf konnte diese Trilogie entstehen. Die Filme sind durchgehend selbst finanziert, was auch ein langsames prozesshaftes Arbeiten ermöglichte. Die Übersetzungen und Untertitel wurden finanziert von der Rosa Luxembzrg Stiftung. ENGLISH: Originally, my approach to the film was based in video art. With time it developed into a research project on the ecological crisis. I live close to the Coal Country Rhineland and thus had the opportunity to extensively visit the area over a long period of time and deepen my understanding. It took me several years to complete the trilogy. It wouldn‘t be enough for me to document the social and ecological destruction and struggles in the Coal Country Rhineland without understanding the underlying relationships, as well as conveying them in the film. The potential of following up on the relationships between people’s lives, land grabbing, resource extraction and the fossil power industry in this area, as well as their reciprocal impacts, was evident from my first visit, after first driving through the roads of this land. The power of a corporation is palpable here, like smoky air. In the area of the gigantic power stations that surmount everything around them as well as on the edges of the mines and in the villages. The decade-long, domineering seizure of land has deeply marked the character of the region. Everything appears violated or remains in tragic expectation. The coming destruction of what lies restfully is equally omnipresent in the still inhabited villages. The already uninhabited villages have been abandoned by people, while birds accompany the wild growth in gardens and parks with their song. The countless, ancient high trees that dress the old places will be removed first of all when demolition starts. For me, in the Coal country Rhineland the interlocking issue complex of the ecological crisis focalises - visibly and invisibly. Even though the word ‘crisis’ may appear too benign for many in the face of worldwide, catastrophic floods, tsunamis and droughts. How is the question on property – of land and resources, phrased in this extensive, ‘excavated’ country where, for hundreds of years, a distinct cultural landscape developed on the basis of the highly fertile loess soils? What do the inhabitants say? What does ‘utilising nature’ mean? What’s behind the call for climate justice? Why don’t the climate agreements achieve the demanded reductions? Why does fossil fuel energy exploration expand? How is resistance organised and what does the struggle between corporation, the state and forest and mine occupiers express?
Thorough answers had to be found to arising questions. I had the opportunity to not only interview people who live, are being or have been resettled and are putting up resistance in the Coal Country Rhineland, but to also speak with people who have been working on the issues of ecology/economy/climate protection for decades and were able to explain the background drawing on comprehensive knowledge, such as Prof. Dr. Clive L. Spash, Jutta Kill and Joanna Cabello. It turned out that understanding what climate policy is about is a lot of work and so it's not surprising really, that little is discussed about a lot of its programs and processes. Take emissions trading and its mechanisms, for example, and the fact that it targets the living conditions of indigenous or local communities in its initial steps. Besides the villages, the journey took me to the Hambach Forest. Despite the large-scale deforestation in the midst of the tri-city area of Cologne, Düsseldorf and Aachen that began in 1972, the forest only became prominent with its occupation. By that point, 80% of the centuries old tree population had been cleared. But even the 20% remaining forest, which I was able to experience in 2012, were huge. A lot has been initiated by the environmental activists: The legendary forest walks with the nature guide Michael Zobel, and not least this film: It was the forest occupation that drew my attention to the area in 2012. Since 2010, with the first climate camp, an international climate movement has formed in the Coal Country Rhineland. It has since grown into a large movement with numerous actors from around the world.
With the help of people form the Hambach Forest Film Collective I was able to get to know and learn to understand the forest occupation from within. The disparity between media narration and personal encounter was significant. One question kept coming back to me: How do we, as a society, deal with those mostly young people, who interfere with the destruction of our planet? I want to give special thanks to everyone who has contributed to this film. The trilogy exists only because of people who involve themselves with research and knowledge, with their own bodies, with editorial contributions, with organising big actions or camps, or in their tireless, individual daily struggles. The films are self financed. This made a procedural approach in the entire work possible. Translation and subtitles were funded by the Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung. The accompanying brochure (68 pages, see attachment) was funded by the Cultural Office of the City of Düsseldorf.
