Aber noch immer steigt der globale Pestizideinsatz an, mit verheerenden Folgen für die Umwelt – auch in Deutschland nimmt die Artenvielfalt rapide ab. Schon vor zehn Jahren stufte die Internationale Krebsforschungsagentur Glyphosat als wahrscheinlich krebserregend ein. Nun will Europa endlich handeln und mit einer Pestizidstrategie die Ackergifte bis 2030 verbindlich um die Hälfte reduzieren und Glyphosat neu bewerten. Doch die Pestizidlobby will das verhindern, läuft Sturm und scheint besonders seit dem Ukrainekrieg damit Erfolg zu haben. Blicken wir zurück auf die Pestizidskandale der letzten Jahre und das zivilgesellschaftliche Engagement von Millionen Europäerinnen und Europäer, die dagegen ihre Stimme erheben.

Während die EU-Kommission im Sommer 2022 ambitionierte Pläne zur Pestizidreduktion vorlegt, trifft auf sie massiver Widerstand der Industrie. Auch bei der Zulassungsverlängerung für Glyphosat scheinen die Industrieargumente bei den Behörden gut zu verfangen. Geschickt werden ökonomische Argumente verbreitet und mit fragwürdigen PR-Methoden in den Vordergrund gestellt, um die Pestizidreduktion auszuhebeln. Dabei bemängeln Toxikologen, dass auch 2022 - trotz der Glyphosat-Skandale der Vergangenheit - die Zulassungsbehörden Studien nutzen, die nicht nach den neuesten Wissenschaftsstandards arbeiten und sogar den OECD-Maßstäben widersprechen. Werden nun in Zeiten des Ukrainekrieges alle Fortschritte der Umweltbewegung zunichtegemacht?
